How to handle interview follow-up questions in English.
A follow-up is usually a request for missing evidence, ownership, reasoning, or reflection. Do not restart the whole story; identify the gap and answer it.
Use pause–clarify–answer–check
- Pause briefly instead of filling space.
- Clarify the angle if the question is broad.
- Answer the missing point first.
- Add one concrete example or number.
- Check whether the interviewer wants more detail.
Example
If I understand correctly, you’re asking why I chose that tradeoff rather than what the team delivered. My decision was based on the two-week deadline and the support risk we had already measured. I can walk you through the alternative we rejected if helpful.
When you do not know
Say what you know, mark what you do not know, and explain how you would find out. A precise boundary is stronger than invented certainty.
