How to answer “Tell me about yourself” in English.
A useful answer is a short argument for why your recent experience fits this role. It is not your full biography and should not sound like a memorized résumé.
Use a present–evidence–direction structure
- Present: state your current professional focus in one sentence.
- Evidence: choose one or two experiences that prove relevant ability.
- Direction: connect what you want next to the role in front of you.
Example answer
I’m a product manager focused on B2B workflow tools. In my current role, I led a redesign of our onboarding flow and worked with engineering and sales to reduce time-to-value for new accounts. That experience made me especially interested in products where adoption depends on complex team behavior, which is why this role stood out to me.
Common mistakes
- Starting with childhood or unrelated education instead of the role.
- Listing responsibilities without evidence of decisions or outcomes.
- Memorizing every word, which makes follow-up questions harder.
- Ending without explaining why this opportunity is relevant now.
Practice test
Record a 60–90 second version, then ask: Can a listener name my focus, one piece of evidence, and why I am here? Retry with keywords rather than a full script.
